When my husband and I first started dating he told me he hated Spaghetti. “Why?!” I asked in disgust. He said because it was boring. I can see how noodles and a store bought jar of Spaghetti sauce could be boring. Thankfully, I have never made it that way. I challenged him to try it the way I made it. He agreed that with the few additions I put in the Spaghetti, it turned the meal from blah to bangin! haha. Here are some of the ways you can spice up (pun intended) the store bought Spaghetti sauce and make it feel much more like homemade.
If you only have a couple minutes to spare:
Add 1 Tablespoon of Italian seasoning and one can of Italian diced tomatoes to your sauce. This will add flavor and texture to the sauce.
If you have a handful of minutes to spare:
Add a dash of olive oil and one minced clove of garlic and half a diced onion to the pan and sauté for 1 minute before adding the sauce, diced tomatoes and Italian seasoning to the pan. Do not burn the garlic though. It will totally ruin everything. (I may have learned this lesson the hard way.) PS- if you do not already have this wonderful contraption, do yourself a favor and snag one now. I purchased this Garlic mincer at a kitchen store some 5 years ago and it was the best purchase I have made in a very long time. I have used it weekly- I am pretty sure I would cry if it broke. Do yourself a favor buy this and never mince garlic by hand again.
If you have two handfuls of minutes to spare:
Slice up 4 ounces of mushrooms or a zucchini and sauté them for 1-2 minutes before adding the minced garlic and half a diced onion and sauté for another minute. Once all the sauce is incorporated add the diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning and one 2.25 ounce can of sliced black olives. (or less if you are like me and your child and husband eat a few before they go in)
Now, some people like their spaghetti with hamburger and some do not. If you are the type to add hamburger to your spaghetti, try adding Italian sausage instead- it has spices that will compliment the sauce so much better.
Voila! Here is my 10 minute addition to tonight’s Spaghetti. Looks pretty delicious doesn’t it! Share in the comments below the additions you have made to Spaghetti.
